Chelsea

Chelsea has been hailed as “one of the few remaining bastions of Vermont character,” and it’s easy to see why. The shire town (county seat) for Orange County, Chelsea has not one but two picturesque town commons, bookended by historic twin brick stores, and a courthouse and a graceful church. Chelsea has the oldest jail in the country that’s still in use, a small town court house, one of the oldest working banks in the state, four general stores. It also, of course, has a covered bridge – the Moxley Covered Bridge spans the First Branch of the White River. Chelsea’s Historic District, including nearly all of the village center, is officially on the National Register of Historic Places. Today, Chelsea is a bustling community sandwiched between mountains to the east and west. Serious collectors and curious onlookers flock to the greens every July for the annual flea market. Locals support local businesses including long-running stores, farms, bakeries, contractors and professionals. Chelsea is home to many amenities that make it a great place to live and raise a family, such as an ice rink, a farmer’s market, strong public schools, and a numerous community services.
